A stand for all who love Africa - imagine the effect on a global level

Standing up for Africa

“One in six African children dies before the age of five. Most of these deaths could be prevented.”

At Stand up for Africa, we don’t think that’s an acceptable figure. Our work focuses on community-led projects in Africa working to improve access to education, health and wellbeing. Our initiatives and projects work to promote and protect the rights of young people and women in some of Africa’s poorest countries, and provide opportunities for income generation.

We complement this practical support by engaging with young people here in the UK to build awareness of development issues and enable young people to develop their own skills and capabilities, while positively influencing the wellbeing and welfare of young people in Africa.

We are standing up against child poverty, lack of access to education and healthcare.

    • Our sincere thanks to Lamia Shamma, Genevieve Smyth, Kate Crawford, Joanne Lamb for raising 361 pounds for our work. This was done through running their 7th Edinburgh Marathon on May 23rd 2010.
Gen Smith the team leader explains: ‘It was a hot day and many people had to stop running. One man died early in the race from a heart attack. I felt fortunate to be able to run at all. My team did well. Despite being called ‘Already Knackered’, they kept running in their fancy dress costumes. My ostrich feather was particularly popular with the crowd. I kept thinking of the heat in Africa and how far some people have to walk to get water. I ran to say how sorry I am for this, for the history of colonial destruction that my country imposed on Africa and for the hope that the West's perspective on Africa is changing into a more positive one, which recognises the continent's vitality and talent. I am so looking to visiting Kenya and Uganda this summer and hopefully doing some skills sharing and learning!’
