Benin

Map showing Benin in west Africa

In Benin, West Africa, there is a severe lack of educational opportunities and vocational training, jobs are scarce, there are limited rural activities for young people, and impoverished children commonly experience human rights abuses.

We work with our partner Enfants Solidaires d'Afrique et du Monde (ESAM) and local communities to develop solutions to the acute problems faced by impoverished children and young people in Benin.

Our Project

Our Maison de l'Enfance Project (Children's Centre Project) provides a safe haven, health care and education for deprived and vulnerable children who need shelter, on a temporary or longer-term basis.

In addition to a safe place to live, each child receives:

  • Monthly health checks and all necessary medical care.
  • Clothing and food.
  • Payment of school fees, school equipment.

Starting work on the new building

Thanks to generous donations from our supporters, we are now building a bigger Maison de l'Enfance (Children's Centre) with facilities to shelter, protect, educate and rehabilitate up to 500 deprived children.

The foundation stone of our new Maison de l'Enfance was laid in August 2007. The Centre will include a school, a counselling and transit centre, dormitories, a medical wing, a kitchen and canteen, and a vocational training room. We need your help to complete the building work and give deprived children in Benin the shelter, education and health care they need. So please, donate whatever you can afford - you will make a real difference to deprived children in Africa.

Why SUFA works in Benin

  • Of every 100 children, 15 will die before reaching the age of five.
  • Nearly a third of children under five suffer from stunted growth due to poor nutrition.
  • Nearly 50% of children are not enrolled for primary school.
  • Only 47% of primary school age girls attend school.
  • More than 75,000 children are currently at risk of being trafficked into forced labour, drug running or prostitution.
  • 32% of the population does not have adequate water.

Benin's economy is underdeveloped and dependent on subsistence agriculture. About half of the population lives in poverty, and 31 per cent survive on less than US$1 a day.
