Case studies: Crisis Response Centre Project

All names have been changed in order to protect the children and young people involved.

Support for Ama, a young woman who experienced long-term abuse

The project recently supported Ama, a young girl who had been sexually abused by a family friend over several years.

When she was 18, Ama fell pregnant and the abuser took her from her parents into his home. She was not allowed to talk to other people, make friends, learn new skills or get a job. She was regularly subjected to sexual abuse, beatings, insults and humiliation.

Eventually, a neighbour helped Ama to escape and brought her to the Crisis Response Centre Project. She was severely traumatised, and the project provided counselling and medical assistance. With this support, she then contacted the police to initiate criminal proceedings against the abuser.

During the police investigation, the project provided her with shelter until she could be resettled. The abuser was tried and promised to change his behaviour. He was required to sign a bond that committed him to supporting Ama during the rest of her pregnancy and after the baby was born.

Ama has now successfully delivered her baby and they are both doing well.

Support for Kwame, a child who was sexually attacked

Our Project is currently supporting seven-year-old Kwame, who was sexually assaulted on two different occasions. He was left with a series of injuries and was severely traumatised.

Our Project staff arranged for Kwame to receive medical treatment and a psychological assessment. He has now been referred to a clinical psychologist.

The perpetrators have been arrested and are currently in remand. Our Project has appointed lawyers to represent Kwame when the case comes to court.
