Map showing Uganda in east Africa

In Uganda, East Africa, SUFA supports deprived young people living in the capital, Kampala. The young people live in squalor, with little education or health care, and few job prospects. They are at risk of getting involved in drugs or crime, and of contracting HIV/AIDS. Their future is bleak.

Our Project

SUFA works with local partner Safe Alternatives for Youth Association (SAFY) to help fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and provide practical, long-term support for deprived young people. Recent Project highlights include:

  • Our Youth Club Network is supporting young people throughout the community.
  • We recruit and train young community leaders to help run the project and provide peer support.
  • We provide vocational counselling and training to help young people find jobs.
  • We offer computer skills training, giving young people a better chance of finding work.
  • Arsenal FC donated football kits to encourage young people to come to the Centre and have fun in a safe, supportive environment.

Our new Youth Drop-in Centre will provide a range of services for deprived young people aged between 10 and 24:

  • HIV/AIDS information and services, including counselling and testing.
  • Sports and recreation facilities that will encourage young people to come to the Centre and have fun in a safe, supportive environment.
  • Skills training, including cookery, carpentry and tailoring.
  • A reading area and computer stations.

Please help us pay for equipment, facilities and youth services at our new Youth Drop-in Centre. You really can make a difference, so please donate whatever you can afford.

Why SUFA works in Uganda

  • 1 in 7 children die before reaching the age of five. Malaria, respiratory infections, diarrhoea and HIV/AIDS are the main causes of death.
  • 39% of children suffer stunted growth due to poor nutrition.
  • A fifth of children do not attend primary school.
  • 60% of the population do not have adequate sanitation.

HIV/AIDS infection levels have declined significantly in Uganda, thanks in part to a national campaign to control the spread of the virus. However, AIDS still presents a major challenge, particularly for young people. A lack of education and support, combined with the risky behaviours of many deprived young people, means 15 - 24 year olds (a third of the population) are most vulnerable to infection.
