Case studies: Skills Exchange Project

Enriching experience in Uganda

Neil Howard teaching in Uganda

SUFA Trustee Neil Howard first visited Uganda as a Skills Exchange Project participant. Neil is now researching child trafficking in Benin as part of his PhD in Development Studies at the University of Oxford, UK. He says,

I helped established a network of youth clubs providing teenagers with constructive ways of filling their time, such as sporting events and sex education classes. My life has been enriched in so many ways by volunteering with Stand Up For Africa.

Informative and fun in Ghana

Phil Rushworth with members of The ARK Foundation

Phil Rushworth (aged 17) is leader of the Burgate School Support Group, who in 2007 helped raise money to start building our new Maison de l'Enfance (Children's Centre) in Benin, West Africa. Phil has also taken part in our Skills Exchange Project, spending four weeks volunteering with our partner The ARK Foundation in Ghana. He describes his Project placement:

My time at The Ark was rewarding, informative and fun. I did a number of written research tasks, including leaflets, manuals and a newspaper article as well as working in the legal centre, observing The ARK outreach programs and doing some administrative work.

I could see that a genuine difference was being made by the charity, and that the staff were passionate and had a good understanding of their aims.
